Description

New York serves as a backdrop for a cast of characters in search of love, lust or lucre including a woman who makes awkward moves on the man renovating her SoHo loft, an embezzler, a sleazy artist and a phone psychic.
Modern reworking of Arthur Schnitzler’s “Reigen”. The play, which depicts a series of linked sexual encounters, provides a convenient structure for depicting a cross-section of society.
“Love in the Time of Money” begins with a prostitute who has a failed encounter with a lower-class contract worker. The contract worker pays a call on a lonely married housewife and sleeps with her. But that’s okay because her husband turns out to be gay. He visits an abstract painter and comes on to him. The painter flirts with a receptionist at a gallery and causes her to dump her boyfriend. The boyfriend tells all his problems to a lonely, aging phone psychic. She accepts a call from a distraught office worker, and he winds up meeting the prostitute again.
“The overall fabric is hypnotic, and Mr. Mattei fosters moments of spontaneous intimacy.” – Dallas Morning News
“It is a great character study that ranks with Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic ‘Magnolia’.” – Film Threat
“Immensely enjoyable, energetic and a superbly performed ensemble piece that is rewarding primarily for its entertainment value.” – Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
